Darn -- 1 month old Silver EX and some loser while parallel parking put a good 8" square scuff on my rear left bumper! The black is showing through in several areas scuffed the worst.

So, besides cleaning and polishing, any suggestions? I can use the touch up paint to fill in the black.

Any expertise out there with hints/tips? I can't spend on having the bumper repainted, and of course the person didn't leave a note. :3:

Thanks in advance.

Depending on how bad it was, I'd put in a claim on my comprehensive coverage, pay the $100 deductible, and get it painted. (N_Jay, here's your chance to tell us about $0 deductibles for comprehensive.:p )

The other suggestion is to clean up the area, touch it up with paint, then top it off with some clearcoat. I did that a couple of years ago with a White Highlander, and you had to get really really close to see the damage.

Between coats I used an extremely fine sandpaper, like the finest they make for body shop use, to smooth out the rought spots, and it looked okay when I was done. I even forgot the damage was there. You can get the touchup paint from the dealer, and the sandpaper and clearcoat from an auto parts store. Good luck.

The scuff is over the 8" area but only a few areas are showing the black.

I will do the to smileys below to myself and post a picture in a minute... :)

That's good! Keeping your sense of humor is good!:p I was really p.o.'ed when it happened to the Highlander (long since traded on the Pilot) but when you back into someone backing into you from a mirror image diagonal parking spot on private property, Virginia and the insurance companies say you're on your own.

At least her Chrysler minivan took the brunt of it. I still, in my mind's eye, see her looking at my damage, her damage, then saying "My husband's gonna kill me." :p

Funny thing...not 10 minutes earlier, in another part of town, I saw someone backing a car into a space certainly too small for their car. And they hit the car behind them so hard it actually rocked backwards about a foot!! I hope there isn't much damage to that car's bumper, let alone its transmission! Was the person parking expecting to shove the cars out of the way to make room? Makes me sick how inconsiderate and stupid people are...

okay going to take the photo...

Close up

Here's a close up of the damage. Note how the paint could keep flaking too... :(

Should I sand the area and find an OEM spray paint? (I found one for my old toyota recently and it was an amazing match!)

Or should I just leave it as is and just use touch-up paint on the black areas? Sigh.

I had an almost identical thing happen to my parked Pilot when another driver had no idea how wide her car was when pulling out into traffic behind me. I VERY lightly feathered the edge of the wounded paint and very slowly built up 2 layers of touch up paint with the brush that came with the bottle. After it all dried I polished it real well and buffed it out with elbow grease and now from anything more than couple feet away the damage can't be seen.

Sand paper

So I can take a very fine sandpaper to my damage and not cause it to rip off more? It will sand down the edges into the black? I'm particularly concerned about it ripping more and wouldn't want to cause more with sandpaper.

Also, I assume this would be done dry.

I've got similar damage...

I accidently scraped my left front bumper on the side of my garage a few months back and got very similar damage. Fortunately mine is Nighthawk Black Pearl, so it wasn't as noticable. I got the touchup paint from Honda and it covered up really well.
